I wonder what happened to all that "booty"? The soldiers in Iraq who found all that US $, lost it all.
As a amateur treasure hunter (White Metal Detector) I have seen many laws that pertain to finding "lost" objects. Many have serious penalties for searching or removing artifacts.
Try going to a Civil War place of action and expect to have a lot of problems unless you have written permission from the owner This applies to your couny, town, city state etc.
Of course, if you are something like Wal Mart, you can destroy a site for the reason of progress.
