    Question on '03 manufacture date

Just bought a Springfield '03, serial number 14430xx, barrel SA 4-32
I checked the manufacture dates for this serial number on old guns.net and it shows a manufacture date of 1934. I was looking at Poyer and he says that assembly of '03s stopped at Springfield Armory in fiscal year 1927. He said that some were manufactured and assembled after that date but only for NM and DCM sales. Was just curious if this might be one of those rifles.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. According to http://www.vishooter.net your receiver was serialized in 1934. Old Guns’ list has problems, Poyer is mostly a waste of paper, drawing are OK. Springfield did not stop,, production of receivers in 1927. Last Springfield receivers made in 1940, J Beardicon.

My strong suggestion,, do not use Poyer for anything, maybe bird cage lining. I think Old Guns’ 03 list might be OK for 03 serial numbers but NOT OK for A3. However I do not use them at all.

USE vishooter’s web site, a lot of careful research by good people, don’t waste your time with the others.

Except for NM and other DCM sales, nearly all receivers made after 1927 were made as "spare parts". Most of them were pieced together, often to replace scrapped low numbered receivers (some with many low numbered parts, as well.

Oldguns seems to be OK with M1903 dates, but not Remington M1903 or M1903A3 dates. As was stated, I depend on Vishooter and other sources. Poyer has some accurate and useful information but it is often hard to tell the "wheat from the chaff" and I do not recommend the book.
