    Newsweek image edited

The image of the Marine drinking from a canteen while holding an M1icon rifle was printed on the cover of Newsweek in November 1944. The photograph was taken on Tarawa and was an official U.S. Marine Corps photo Headquarters #63489, Distribution List Navy-3-4. The unedited print illustrates that another Marine appeared in the background but was edited out perhaps because he appears to be disembodied or was thought to be distracting from the image.
