    Check out this poor last ditch. Should I strip the finish?



    There is grey paint under all that shellac! That wood grain is fake?






    Duffel cut..




    Is this normal? Cut on barrel.



    Serial number..




    Tool marks?

    dont know about faking wood grain, but it looks rather strange. I would strip it.

    I agree sometimes stripping an old stock is all you can do.

    Looks to me like someone tried to stain it. You might have a real job trying to get rid of the stain effects, if it truly was stained.

    It was stained alright. I could have done better with a Hershey bar and a brillo pad!

    I used circa 1850 furniture stripper and a brass brillo pad to take off the finish. Bubbled up nicely and lucky I used rubber gloves. I have never seen a stain that can stain human skin like that stuff!

    I will put images in as soon as I finish with the turp/linseed oilicon treatment.

    I think it at least looks better!!










    I believe it is a series one but I can not read the series mark on the Nagoya. Does not make sense if it is a Last ditch.

    Wow!! BIG difference! Just goes to show what that wonderful stuff called "elbow grease" can do. Being cut off under the band makes it easier to attach a section from a donor stock.
