    Smith-Corona bolt

I hadn't given my SC a critical perusal in many years before this evening. Aside from the fact that I had forgotten that it has a 6 groove barrel (12-42) everything about it was correct and as I had remembered it. I disassembled the bolt to check for markings. The only marks I found was an R on the extractor and on the underside of the handle root a '1' and what appears to be a cluster of 3 punch marks. The only reference to SC bolt marks that I can find is to an 'X' on the top of the handle. Can anyone provide some insight here.

    Thanks,

Sounds like a SC bolt w/ Remington extractor. --Jim

Early Smith-Corona bolts had no "X" atop the handle, but were indeed marked with a "1" underneath the handle. The "R" marked extractor may be original to your rifle. Do not replace it.

fwiw, I have found several 'R' marked extractors on seemingly original SC bolts,

but these were invaiably on rifles that went through Ogden [OG]

and Ogden is known for wholesale bolt swapping on their "inspected" A3's ...

    so ~ ymmv ~

The key word in your statement is "seemingly". Perhaps it should be "definitely". More reading is required.
