    M16 numbers

IN another forum, they mention M16s ( I believe) as 601s, 602s, etc. Is that a nomemenclature the government gave them?

No, those are Colt's in-house model numbers.

    heavy barrel Colt upper

Back in the early 1990's some dealers had the upper Colt 606 without the
lower at different gun shows. These heavy barrels have the 1 in 12 twist. This upper came from a gunshow back in the 90's too. I really have not seen too many of these 606 uppers around - are they kind of rare ?
