    Canvas carry cases

There have been a number of threads over time about these cases but all a bit disjointed.

Possibly, because I suspect there were one or two on official equipment lists, but some procured from official suppliers but not necessarily to CES? specification?

Kosher? examples I have seen would seem (so far as detail and lengths go) to be for the Nr 5, Nr 4, L42/L39, and there were certainly full length and shortened examples for the SMLE as well as 'jump' cases.

I wonderif there is any interest in trying rationalise a thread on the various examples?

Two examples I have are for the Nr 4 and, I suspect, the L42/L39:-

Alll the L42 ones that I ever saw were extended No4 ones with a webbing extension at the muzzle end. But never ever saw one extended with teh leather/leathette like that shown. These were usually modified to an IP by the Sailmakers shop (later they became 'equipment repairers') at the big workshops. The case had to be thoroughly dried out then turned inside-out and the extension sewn in from the inside. Then turned outside-in and lo and behold, a cheap but tidy extension.

Some were slit so that the telescope could remain attached to the rifle but I don't think that this was ever anything official. In fact I'm absolutely SURE that it wasn't because the webbing cases just retained the dampness.

It's pretty common to find surplus ones that have been altered commercially on the lines illustrated, with gussets and snout extensions and carrying straps made out of Sten gun slings (like the one above) or '44 webbing. For many years this was the only cheap one you could get and Parker-Hale offered altered ones as a catalogue item. One I have here fits a P-14 very well. A gusset was pretty much a necessity if you had a PH5 sight of some sort on board - you couldn't force it in otherwise.
