    1886 Enfield

    Good Morning to all,

I was in a local gun store yesterday and they had a converted 1886? percussion/cartridge Enfield .
The receiver was a block that housed the firing pin, rotated to the right, opening the chamber.
It appeared it was about a .50 cal.
    Any answers or opinions?

    Thanks

Sounds like a .577 Snider, they came between the british percussion caps and the martini henry. i like them, they look like a lot of fun. Not first on my wants list but definitely on my "eventually" list.

You can buy brass and bullet moulds for them. Search youtube for "british muzzleloaders" channel. He has a fair bit about loading and shooting them.

Like this? That 1886 date sounds a bit late?

Agreed Ridolpho, aspen80, are you sure the date on the lock wasn't 1866?

    Hi Guys,

You know, with my dyslexia it could have very well been 1866. I remember seeing Enfield and what I thought was 1886 BUT, I would not doubt it was 1866.
The barrel length was because it was "sporterized. What is the possibility of finding an original stock?
    Thanks for your help.

It may be best to look for a damaged stock with a usable forearm if that is all you need. Original Snider-modified P53 stocks, if you can find one, are very expensive.

You may be able to graft onto your shortened stock the fore-end from this
