    T34 Calliope tank

The OPs picture is fascinating. It illustrates not only the use of a 60mm Mortar with M7 grenade launcher, but a pair of T34 (Calliope) Sherman rocket launcher variants. The latter saw service starting in 44 with the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 12th, and 14th armored divisions

I believe the 60mm Mortar round was to only be used in emergency and never on the grenade launcher for the M1icon Carbine or with the auxiliary cartridge.

I believe your recollections are correct and I wouldn't do it on a dare...it would be a brute.

What kind of projection adapter is he using in this photo? The bottom half looks like the regular M1icon projection adapter but the top part does not look like the M1's top to me. Any thoughts? I guess what I am asking is to fire the 60 mm mortar round from a grenade launcher, did it take a special adapter to do so? Or did they use the regular M1 adapter?

Yes. the regular launcher slid up the tailpipe of the tailfin assembly and the mortar bomb fixed into the tailfin assembly. Here's a piece about it. https://www.facebook.com/100thInfant...2534652782642/

It may just be the picture or the angle but it looks like that projection adapter is struggling to hold the top heavy 60 mm mortar round straight. Looks like the tip of the mortar round is sagging or drooping down. I would be worried it would just cartwheel after launching

Thanks BAR! A very interesting read that I had not seen before. I didn't even know 60 mm mortars were ever used from grenade launchers until this thread.

As pointed out, we've had a few discussions about them. I always maintain I never liked firing grenade launchers because of the blast in the face but others talked about what a kitten they were... This 60mm, I wonder which bright boy looked at that and said "Hey, I know what!"... I guess they worked but the testimony shows they weren't the favorite. I've shot the regular M1icon grenade and it was like the FN rifle grenade...recoil and noise. Lots of blast.
