I had heard that Smith and Wesson started with a P38 magazine when they designed the P38

You mean when they designed the S&W 39...yes, that's right.

I checked the bore, and actually found it was bright and shiny, and the rifling was crisp!

That's not so unusual...it's what we advocate around here. Shoot and clean again, see what's happening.
