As paratroopers we are always surrounded and outnumbered, but one thing I distinctly remember being taught was, "Son if you need to pull that useless thing out of its scabbard your are in deep ****"
Always avoided using it when firing as well, as most well aimed shots hit the dirt and well short of the target.

The ranges do look pretty archaic now. I would date that as 1966 or so just before the issue of the high BOOTS, combat we all got to replace our old ammo boots - as they're wearing the high gaiters with a strap underneath. Also Owens that went on until the late 60's
