Looks OK it may be that someone has forced the magazine from a No4 rifle into it as Savage only make No4 rifles not SMLEs.

You can get the mag out with some real effort. Then you may still have a fitment problem with a #1 mag, they may need some hand fitting.

Thx gents - Ill tackle the magazine soon - maybe I do have some luck and its a N04 magazine - seem harder to get these days. Hand fitting a replacement No1 will be a welcome break to house restoration.

Might need to make a small peg to plug the screw hole for the butt marking disc before re drilling and replacing it, looks like the hole is enlarged. Should come up nice with a littleTLC.

Just our of curiosity, was the number on the receiver lined out and a new one added? Or does it appear that the action ring was milled a wee bit and the number added in the same funky font as the nose cap?

A member posted about his Savage No4 a couple of days ago. It has a no1 magazine. Maybe you guys could consider a swop? (Sorry on a mobile otherwise I'd post the thread link).

Hi Frederick303 - I don't know if you can see that in the photos in detail, but you're right, the receiver ring does appear to be notched and the only serial is with the funky font. I have not observed a lined out serial other than the rear sight.
Thanks for the swap hint desperatedan!
