    NZ proof question

Gentlemen, I figured you guy's could answer this rather easily, On US rifles that were lend leased to New Zealandicon specifically M1903's, the stock is often proof with a large NZ above a number that does not correspond with the rifle s/n, is this a unit, armory or inventory control number? what does the number reference?
    thanks
    Dave

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Yep NZ and rack number, this was added to all NZ military firearms until 1960, the first few batches of Lithgowicon L1A1's and Sterling L2A3's were the final issue firearms to be so marked before this was discontinued.
