Unusual Number Placement and Different Grain Pattern

I have this Stock and cannot find why these Numbers are there and I noticed 2 different grain patterns on each side. One by the Sling Well on top of numbers and the other side by the oiler cut out which is a lot bigger. To me it looks like a Repair or possibly Sanded. I thought I would show it and might get some help on this . Thank You.

Something they didn't want showing was removed by scraping and a bit of sanding? - Bob

Could have been a personal ownership mark such as name and social security number, something non-military applied.

Maybe the numbers were too deep and would have removed too much wood.

Jim, They are mostly deep you could be right on since it would be right where the Sling Well starts then it would be a more of a give away to the Sanding or Scraping if that's what it is. I just don't understand usually people leave every mark on the Stock unless Darren is right and it could of been a Personal Marking.

Looks like they gouged it out with a wood chisel. Like you say, must have been a deep mark that somebody wanted to get rid of, but no way to know who or why. The other marks look like some kind of rack number to me. I'd guess that stock was in another country at some point.

On the Oiler side you can see the line right where it looks like a chisel or sharp knife started then goes towards the Oiler, but it doesn't feel uneven it does feel a bit smoother though.

Defiantly a bubba job as looks like it has about as much care done to it as sticking a lighted match into a petrol tanker to see how full it is (And believe me that was done I have seen the security footage of the act and the resultant explosion, the blast put the guy through the roof literally he survived pretty singed and banged up though, like I say anything is possible on this chocolate ride called Earth.)

That's scraping for sure. I doubt it had anything to do with military at all. There was no sanding apparent. just scrape and that's all, who knows what was there?
    Regards, Jim
