I know the caption says otherwise - but could it be some kind of flare gun shoved in the holster? Or a personal weapon of another model? Does not look like a 1911 at all. What looks like it would be the magazine has rounded sides.

I doubt it's a flare gun as you know how fat they are and a revolver grip has an arch. Here's close enough that you can see the frog on the piece of rifle sling he's using for a pistol belt.
