Documentation can be informative as well as misleading.

No one has apparently recognized is that the rifle is a 1919 National Match rifle! And the original sale was probably quite legal.
How is that for "misleading"?

Only because I owned one at one time. As soon as I saw the 109XXXX Ser.# I had the same thought you had, someone bought it quite legally and subsequently sold it.
I'm glad all those squealers who reported every 03 they saw aren't around today to turn us in!
Are you gonna post these interesting tidbits over on Jouster also? Seems kinda slow over there. I'm still a junior member because I can't find much to post about.
Thanks for the entertainment,
Emri

Junior ROTC, ah, yes. I remember in High School one day a Dad of a student brought in a weapon for our ROTC class. This fellow had catured it in the South Pacific in WWII. It was very nice, fully operational 6.5mm Nambu LMG. ROTC in Honolulu was sure fun!

Hey Emri,
I can think of something for you to post about. Take a coupla' photos of your most interesting '03, post'em and we can discuss the rifle. Unless you're worried about one of those old brownosed hall monitors still being around and dropping a dime on your suspect rifle

Go have a look Robert. It is not a USMC rifle, but you should like it anyway.

Would that have been during the time period when surplus US .30/06 Military rifles were not available for sale to civilians?
Bannerman's catalog gives the unavailability of surplus .30/06 rifles as the reason for marketing his hodge podge para military rifle built from mixed Springfield and M1917 parts.
Could be a good condition Springfield 1903 showing up in a pawnshop raised some red flags at the time.
Plus there was a very violent race riot in Chicago, I think it was around that time, that had resulted in a large number of ROTC rifles having been stolen, the rifles from all schools in the city then being gathered up and put under guard at city hall.
