as Paul Harvey says
here is rest of the stumper-check out the cam cut that some bubba gunsmith evidently did. My hunch is the thing was not cycling the best with the gas relief it was getting and bubba gunsmith spotted the heart shaped cut at top and thought was machining error?????? I have fired 30 rds thru it and its fires and works smooth as silk but is dirty gun to shoot, kinda like shooting russian ammo shooting LC or shooting a M2 full auto. Does anyone know any other reason it would have a cut like this??

Marcus I think your right about it. The carbine may not have cycled properly and someone cut the new hole trying to get it to function which would have led to the machining on the slide too. Bubba at his best only because it worked.

Marcus,
When you add the slide work it makes it look like it was done later. What serial number range is it in?

192xxxx. Slide was done later. Obvious work done after finish. I really believe the two holes was a winch screwup. A decent gunsmith that understands gas systems would simply have tapped and put set screw in the extra hole. That is perplexing part. Gas piston is free. No sign of anything but having Been taken out. We're there any mods ever done to carbines that would have needed the total round area for the bolt lug? I guess I looking for something not said or known.

Try another slide on it and see what it does. I would be curious about that.

I too, think it was an attempt to get a stuck piston out. What's that shiny area at the bottom of the 2nd hole? Maybe after they got the stuck piston out, they did some work on the cylinder making it deeper, then pressed in a plug to block the hole from the inside? If the 2nd hole was leaking gas, wouldn't it have carbon build-up around it? If it were mine, I would take it apart and see what's in there. It looks like it's already been apart a few times judging by the staking on the nut. - Bob
I didn't realize there was a second page when I posted this - new twist on the story beginning on this page!

It does look like someone used tools around the hole
the shiny spots above and below, where a rod, drill or screwdriver rubbed against the metal. There is also some discoloring inside like JB weld or something else was stuffed inside to close the hole. And the slide thing?? Maybe the guy was using incorrect powder and needed to vent more gas and speed up the bolt. In the 50s these things were $20 items and if you had $100 worth of stolen government powder?????
Inland: Thanks for the lesson, I should have gotten one out and looked at mine.
