One drawback to firing undersize bullets is that the gas can continue passing around the bullet for a considerable distance up the bore, rather than just at the throat. That means erosion rapidly eats away the rifling and accuracy goes to heck quickly.

m1909 rechambered
The m1909 rifles that are stamped as 30.06 were typically sold to department store in the US by an importer as cheap hunters. The rechambering was done because of the lack of 7.65 Belgian ammo available for the weapon. In many cases the wood was also "sported". I have one of these that I rebarreled to .308. These rifles have a very strong receiver and are suitable for many rounds. Just keep in mind the size of the bolt face and the length of the magazine. With a comp trigger, a muzzle brake and a decent scope you can make a fine rifle from it. It's already altered so there's no need to sweat it. After the fifty round break in on the new barrel I can put three rounds in one half inch at 250 yards. That would be from a bipod. If you have the patience to do it, a hand reaming on a short chamber barrel is likely best.
