Here's an educated guess:
1) Carbine ammo has never been the most popular so the supply available out there was never as much as 9mm or .223, for instance.
2) The CMP released the carbines, which wiped out any in-warehouse reserves.
3) The current ammo-panic hit.
I'm guessing (not that we'll ever know) that is the CMP hadn't released the recent batch of carbines, the ammo would be no better or worse than anything else.
FWIW; AFAIK; IMHO; YMMV; yadda, yadda, yadda.

Conrad,
Thanks for the link and all I can say is "wow". I have no idea why that one wasn't in my bookmarks. (It is now).
Just blew away a couple of hours there!
I hate that it's been kinda abandoned but there's a bunch of good info there for folks to glom onto.

Ed, that's pretty much my take on the whole thing too.
I never bothered to stock up because it was always available and cheap.
Had I not had my head "where the sun don't shine" after November I woulda been picking up the HP, SP and JHP whenever I saw it.
Payin' for it now.....

Contrary to popular belief guys, the only change since November is the firearms industry itself taking off and out of sight.
Ammo prices have been on the steady incline for the past two years, availability has been drying up for the past 18 months with .30 carbine being one of the hardest hit.

I think the problem is a lower overall demand for .30 carbine than the other brands you mentioned. Add that to the fact that the companies don't make ammo in every caliber all the time but rotate production and you have the makings of a critical shortage of .30 Carbine when folks started to stock up a few months ago.

May I ask sir what mold you are using and where we might find such an animal? We are currently casting for .30 cal and 7.62x39 but the carbine mold seems hard to find.

Lee makes a 113 gr gas check design. And not to drive you guys craz, but there was plenty of carbine ammo at the Berea Ohio gun show today. I saw several boxes of Milsurp, cans full of bandoliers, and even a stack of boxes of the Chinese LC 52! There was also a fair amount of commercial. You guys are just looking in the wrong places.......

Jim,
I am curious as to the prices at your gun show today?
I had a converstaion with a gunshop manager today who related yet another firsthand story of a "customer" who came in and bought out the store's available stock of primers and powders, then the operator saw him at the gunshow here in Fort Worth the next weekend - yep, the "customer" had the same powders and primers at nearly half the price. Ain't greed a wonderful thing?

I'm not all that old and I remember buying .30 carbine ammo at gunshows for $4.99 a box. Even so, it's fortunate for me that I've been saving my carbine brass for 20 years. I saved it in a old Coleman ice chest that's full, so it looks like reloading carbine ammo that I started doing a few years ago is going to pay off.
