Special Investigation Branch, dont know the ins and outs and who or what forms them but were mainly Military Police, think now more like plain cloths detectives etc, ebay is of great interest to them (so I,m told).

Lots of Detachments all over the world formed into sections, who specialise in a number of areas, all of which cover the usual criminal activity found in civvy street, but within the Armed Services.
Now all three services co located in Portsmouth

I thought it was common knowledge......... Look here and learn............. There is a section based at XXXXX that look at pretty well everything that has a recent army background that appears on all/most of the auction sites. And you can be rest assured that ALL SUSAT sights, Night Vision and sights with a UK Military interest are examined and followed up. They regularly 'win' the auction and when you cannot come clean with where/how it was obtained, your collar is felt and you loose the kit AND your money and sometimes, a few days in the slammer.

There......, it's fairly well known and not secret. If you shouldn't have it and/or cannot PROPERLY* account for it, THEN DON'T BLOODY AUCTION IT!
*. PROPERLY account does not include buying it from a man in a pub

I,m lost here, Peter you mentioned in post #17 to put one on ebay and see what happens...... but you left it as that.

Maybe common knowledge to a few, but not everyone is aware of the fact the MOD are not keen on the loss of kit that has come out of the back door or fell off a wagon.

I was just pointing out the fact ebay was monitored for this kind of stuff, and a warning to all and not just a few, think a few may or could take it the wrong way (post #17) and maybe thinking they can make a fortune .....

I think Peter was clearly laying down the law as yet another reminder, but should be an obvious reminder to those bent on selling on FleaBay or anywhere on the open web those items that are or were G1098 sensitive commodities, and not removed or stolen from HM Forces. Those that are caught and there have been a few, make the daily papers regularly.

I was being flippant Big Duke! ANYTHING that is deemed what we call V&A for Valuable and Attractive are closely monitored as sure as night follows day. We used to deal with the people who monitored this stuff........... One of them was a lovely Military Policewoman who's dad was a civilian policeman so when she came to see us on a bit of Army business, she always bought her dad too for a bit of a jolly. Well, you know what it's like!

There are ways that things go missing and remain 'lost' or 'diverted' out of the system but they are serially numbered usually. And when they DO come to light, the paper trail audit starts and as well as the bloke possessing the item getting the chop, so does the person who covered its tracks in the first place.

As Gil says, many are caught............. So, If you shouldn't have it and/or cannot PROPERLY account for it, THEN DON'T BLOODY AUCTION IT!

Stop reading now if you don't want me to go off at a tangent.......... Just as an aside, I used to be knee deep in SUSAT sights at work and wanted one for my own single shot straight pull SA80/L98 rifle. Could have had plenty. But the thought of questions that I couldn't answer and knowing how the system operates........ So I bought one from Avimo. Cost more than the rifle but good sight though!

Yes Roger that no worries, but as I spent some time with them, I was speaking from knowledge and experience gained.
The lists of kit that went walkabouts we received each month, would make your eyes water, from watches to the biggest vehicles.
The loss of the bigger stuff was probably more prevelant in Rheindallen perhaps rather than the UK, especially as the borders became open,. as the camp was really split in two by a public road which the public could have ready access too as a drive through!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
