My new Ugly Duckling Project - Inland Carbine

I finished the Winchester My first M1 Carbine - Value? and now I've taken on a more serious project. This 6,397,xxx had some serious Bubba treatment. At one time it had a fore grip glued to the type 3 barrel band which had its sling swivel cut off.

The IO stock has a lot of character but someone thought they could sand out the etched rack #10 on right side. They probably succeeded in destroying what was left of the Ordinance wheel. The stock has been through rebuild three times. There is a AAD and two AN stamps on the left side along with 3 P stamps on the front of the pistol grip. I've been given very detailed instructions on cleaning up the stock and restoring the sanded area on the right side by a very helpful and knowledgeable member of another Forum. The other parts of the rifle looked a lot worse than the pictures below. I cleaned up a lot before the pictures were taken.

The Inland circa 1944 part hunt is just about complete with the exception of the rear sight, currently a milled type 2 with a "H" in shield.

    Stay tuned

Three rebuild stamps! That must be a record. AAD is Anniston Army Depot and I think AN is too, maybe later.

AAD is for Augusta Armory and the AN is Anniston. You have done a good job with the Winchester and I am sure you will be able to get the Inland up to par too.

Personally, I don't find your ugly little Inland so ugly...at least you have one. I'm kinda short right now...that one would suit me right to the ground.

Inland Ugly Duckling Bubba Treatment Reversed

Bubba once thought he could sand out the deeply etched rack number on the side of the stock along with plenty of other goofy ideas. Some people more knowledgeable than me suggested I try to reverse these travesties. (See pictures above)

Besides replacing parts, cleaning off epoxy and home parking the thrice rebuild stamped stock needed to be preserved. I received some very detail instructions from a long time Carbine expert from another site. Following those instructions proved time consuming but was worth the effort. I also found a hand guard with wear that matched the stock. Together they fit the rifles character. This set will be this rifles work clothes for the range.

This project is not finished but here's the results so far:

You're right. It's 'AA' and 'D' for the inspector - I jumped the track on that one. You see 'ANAD' for Anniston as well as 'AN', which I think is more rare.

    Inland Stocks

The stock set above is for shooting. This set is the Inland's Sunday-Go-To-Meeting stock set. I purchase the stock from a refinishing person in Ohio who I think not only does great work but is very honest. He could have removed the RIA rebuild stamps and fetched a higher price, but he didn't and that says a lot to me. I did the Hand Guard.
