    Latest addition

Made a trek to the National Gun Day in Louisville this past weekend. Long drive, but worth it. I almost didn't go, as my usual gun show traveller couldn't go. NGD has usually been good to me, so I was on the road at 4:00 am, and was there by 9:30 (10:30 local time). There were not many Enfields at the show; a 1918 Lithgowicon sniper less scope, for 2,500 was worth remembering. This is my last big "Bucket List" rifle (except for an Envoy, a Centaur, a No. 8, a No. 9..... you get the idea)

Excellent find. Mind if I ask how much it cost? I was at the Crossroads of the West Show in Reno today (10 minutes drive from my house), but Enfields were not in any great number. Then again, I'm saving my pennies up for an Enforcer

Nice bit of kit, there! The crate label is very interesting as well.

Not trying to spoil your new treasure, but one bit of caution:

Maybe its just me, but before you take it to the range make sure the front pad is still tight. Two of the three I've had came w/ this drama. Easy fix.

One test is just to see if it wiggles at all using Mk1 finger tools. Perhaps Captain Laidlericon has an official bench test.

The screws alone won't stand up to recoil- they'll joggle and eventually shear off, I suspect. See pics:

The LH screws are new, the RH are the old ones. The rearmost screw seems to get the most damage.

That's as the rifle came in- definitely a noticable movement just w/ hand pressure.

If it's tight it seems to last a long time, my first one has never needed any attention in 15 or 16 years. Having said that...

Its the one thing to watch on these. (I wonder if it came from the use of the right heavy IWS? Gotta induce higher loads under recoil.)

The front pads certainly did work loose but re-soldered properly again, they'll last a lifetime. We used to file a small flat alng the screw threads to allow the solder to run into the threads and then tighten them up while they were at your solder melt point so that they'd contract down and literally pull the pad into place.

Just keep an eye on them and if you really are hell bent on staking anything then stake the edge of the SCREW into a convenient slot in the pad and not the other way round

Peter, Mine must've had that repair as the front pad hasn't shown a problem.

    limpetmine, You're gonna love it!

At least I managed to get my import marks on straight. I repaired all of the loose front pads I encountered on the L42's I imported over the years. I had a good instructor too. There weren't many that were in need. I've got plenty of new screws if anyone is ever in need.

The green freight lable is a current air cargo lable used by the RAF. I can get any number off my freindly stacker if someone wants one.

It looks like it was diverted to ABRO Donnington for some reason, perhaps repair.

    Brian,

What do you know about the markings on the underside of the barrel, just forward of the stock? There is what appears a proof stamp as well.
Thanks, and thanks for the scan.
