    U.S property removed?

Colt 1911 serial # 2851xx made in 1918 . I thought someone ground off the U.S. property but the originan finish looks perfectly the same. I put a micrometer on the frame and it reads .756 everywhere from one end to the other. My best guess is that it was never stamped. to remove the leters would reduce thickness in the frame by at least .005" ?

Without good photos, all I can do is state an opinion from looking at countless other examples without the USP marking, and also consider countless other known original pistols with the USP marking.

Along with that, we have the specifications all pistols were required to meet before being accepted/approved by the Ordnance Dept. final inspector...which require the USP marking.

You state the pistol is original and you don't see any difference where the marking should have been removed.

If your pistol is in fact original finish and has a final inspection marking on it, it's extremely unlikely there wasn't a USP marking on it when accepted.

What I normally see when this comes up is a refinished pistol that's had marking(s) removed.

Good pictures are the only way we might be able to help.
