Arrow Garand picture of the day - Airfield #2 Iwo Jima

    Iwo Jima Operation, 1945

"In the shadow of a captured Jap blockhouse on second airfield, Iwo Jima, Marines inch forward under heavy enemy fire. They are: (left to right), Private First Class John J. Helus ..., and Corporal John A. Hicks ..." (quoted from the original 1945 vintage caption).
Taken by Sergeant Bob Cooke, the photograph shows one Marine aiming his M1icon Rifle while the other stands ready with a Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR).

read 'lions of iwo jima' about the 28th marines on iwo.
according to the book, one jap did surrender saying,

    "screw this hari kari sh*t!"

turns out he was from chicago and was visiting relatives in japan when the war broke out and was drafted.
don't know what became of him.

Sounds like the kid from Chicago [?] in the 1st Gulf War, visiting his grandmother in Iraq when the SHTF. Got drafted, no training, no uniform, no gun, got sent out in the field. When the overwhelming odds showed themselves, the ragheads started surrendering in mass, one bunch led by a teenager in tennis shoes, Bermuda shorts, and a Chicago U. sweatshirt, cussing at the top of his lungs, "where the hell have you been, WTF took you so long", GI's didn't believe him at first, he gave them a phone number in Chi town to call, all was verified in a hurry, he led them back to a lot of stuff, and a lot of info. Got a free plane ride home for his effort.

    Mark,
this gas cylinder below is off of Iwo Jima. A serviceman pilot brought it back in 1995. I now own it along with a nice rifle from Okinowa. Rick Bicon

The person I bought this from stated it was a "Hit Rifle" as you can see the lower band was smashed and the barrel has heavy chatters from a hit. They salvaged the parts they could use and tossed it. It may have been a battle pick up and stripped. The previous owner wire wheeled the rear to see the serial number. Rick Bicon
