Rebuilding a raped rifle
Hello y'all,
Well as the title says, I am in the beginning stages of rebuilding a beauty and here we go. First of all I traded a yugo mauser that I picked up for 99$ a few years ago. I have looked and even now the mauser that I traded is at a max worth maybe 300$. So that said I traded the mauser for a 1903 MK I, because I love the 03 rifles in general. So there is an issue with the 03, it was raped, and hard. The rifle has been "sporterized" by some stupid person, at least it was a gunsmith do a professional, like a porn star in that context i suppose. Ok back to it the rifles stock has been cut, the trigger has been replaced with a timney trigger, and the receiver has was tapped, two holes front and two back, the front and rear sights have been removed. The butt plate has been removed and a pad installed and i mean installed well, ill include a picture.
Needless to say I am not a fan of this rifle rape. so here is what I am doing and this will lead into my actual question.
I already know that a MK I is a special design and this includes the trigger and stock to say the least. So I have decided to do my best to restore the rifle as much as I can.
So I have purchased a remington 03A3 stock with hardware
I purchased a remington front sight, site cover, and blade to install that
with that I have the biggest question's to follow
First of all since the stock is an 03A3 I already know that the original rear sight that would've been in front of the receiver wont go into that area, obviously.
So I ordered a rear peep sight designed for the 03A3, and I have a feeling that it may be hard but doable to have it retrofitted onto the MKI , especially since the rifle already has been tapped in the area.
now Has anybody attempted/completed this? now continuing this I ask if I should fit the timney into the "new" stock or if I should get a trigger.
Now for my final question, is it advisable to attempt to fill the tap holes on the front portion of the receiver and then re-stamp or carve the missing M and 1 where the holes were drilled. So thats all i suppose and for as of now 340$ i should have close to a complete recovering from rifle rape 1903.
I hope that if anyone has done some bits of info or experience I can have it.
if i am rambling or incoherent its probably the pain drugs they have me on

You may be able to find a decent original barrel close to your serial number date.....or any 1903 barrel with the standard rear sight. I think trying to machine the MkI receiver to accept the 03A3 rear sight will be difficult, expense a PITA or all three. Or you could drill/tap for a Lyman type receiver sight. An earlier stock would not be too difficult to obtain or an appropriate early style stock from CMP could be had. Original MkI stocks can be located, but may take a while.....same with the MKI trigger parts, which, since you don;t have the device, are not really necessary. It is your rifle, though, build it the way you want. As far as the screw holes....you could just have small, flush screws inserted, or leave them the way they are.......reStamping the "M" "I" could be expensive, too. With the drilled holes, you could try for an "03A4" Clone. at least that would make use of the holes.
Again, it is up to you. What do YOU want to do with this rifle?
