More Questions About My No.4 Mk.1

just when i think i've asked them all, more questions make themselves apparent.

question 1:

down the left side of the top of the receiver on my 6/42 Fazakerley made No.4 Mk.1 is stamped "SYK"; any ideas what that means?



question 2:

the bolt on it matches the serial number on the left wrist band. but preceding the serial number on the bolt appears to be a Savage "S". i know Savage made barrels for the UK in the early stages of the war when the Luftwaffe was destroying factories in England (this rifle has a 2 groove barrel that is one of those), so my question is, did the US make and supply bolts too?

Yep, Savage supplied bolts as spare/replacement parts. They were immediately recognisable as they were always (?) a pale grey finish and came in a pinky/red greased cloth wrapper which meant that they had to be rinsed in the warm trichlorethylene bath to get the thick grease off. I shoud add that this wasn't just bolts but most other parts too

We washed our greasy hands in it as well. Not all of us got cancer.

That sooooooo true Ralph! We had a 25 or so gallon drum of trike stuck in the corner of the Armourers shop. open all day and covered with a sheet of plywood at night. If you dropped something into it instead of using the wire basket, you looked for it, up to past your elbows in the stuff. In the VM's shop there was a HUGE vapour tank of the stuff that you could immerse a complete Bedford engine and gearbox or 100 rifles at a time. Nope........, ain't got cancer yet either!

My complete MGB GT V8 front crossmember assembly went in - as did the axle and most other stuff too

lol, even http://www.leeenfieldrifleassociation.org.uk/ can't give me a solid answer as to the "SYK" on my receiver. they said it could have been anyone at anytime.
