size of cartouches / serif/non-serif proof mark
Hi there,
Once again cartouches - were there official sizes for the them? And as I noticed there are P (Proof) marks with and without serif. When and where were those with and without serif used (starting from a special date, just on stock type XY, just with model XY/manufacturer XY, ..)?
Regards,
Georg

The script P stamp on my 1908 RI stock is the same size as the one on my A3 Rem stock - 7/16 inch diameter circle. I think SC used 1/2 inch diameter stamps on their A3 stocks. I've noticed 2 different sizes of crossed cannons on A3 stocks.
The script P was replaced sometime in the 1920's with the block style. Canfield
Looking at Ferris' Rock Island book -
Rock Island used script P through both production periods.
Springfield phased out script P prior to WWI.

non serif P in circle
My 160xxx SA with a SA 2-07 barrel, CCV cartouche on a no-bolt stock, has the plain or non serif P in a circle

Rock Island used the "script" P throughout production; Springfield changed over sometime before WWI (I have a 1915 NRA Sales M1903 with a "script" P). The make matters confusing, one of the arsenals that did overhauls (Augusta, I think) also used script Ps.
