Possible New Book In The Works

A Woman's attempt to understand and cope with the M1icon Carbine Addiction.

    What is Carbine Addiction?
How bad is this addiction and can it be cured?
How does it affect the lives of those close to a Carbine Addict.

A few M1 carbine collectors and I were doing what we do, talking about carbines when a young female author who had quietly endured listening to a couple hour long discussion of stocks, parts integration, sub contracts and lateral support inquired "What is the attraction to these rifles"

Caught off guard I found myself speechless for a moment, then after giving her the usual replies we've all used on our wives, girlfriends, co-workers, friends, neighbors etc. I realized I hadn't answered her question, just looking in her glazed over eyes pretty well insured me of that. It was that same look we've all seen time after time. Then I quietly thought to myself how do I answer this? I'm the one my wife and daughter found asleep with a Rock Ola barreled receiver while laid up hurt.

She's had a number of books published and began tossing around the idea of putting together a read for the gals and friends (The Non Afflicted Ones) in our lives with an attempt at trying to help them cope and answer a few of these questions for them. My impression..... She was thinking of a How To Guide along the lines of- How To Deal With a Carbine Addict, The Afflicted Ones. I think a book like this would have to cover a lot of bases. Hardcore Addicts spend day and night searching auction sites. Reading and posting on endless forums. Swapping, trading, gun show deals, gun range dealings, buying and selling with fellow addicts, club and forum members. Running from gun show to gun show with state boundaries meaning nothing more than the lines on the road. Garage sales, flea markets, pawn shops, both large and small gun shops, both near and far. Even dealing from other countries across the globe. Time zones, international calls, count less E-mails and area codes taken for granted in the quest. The author would have to take all of this into account and more to begin to explain our actions, our endless search.

I'd have to say it is amusing to laugh at ourselves. So this potential book if written with some humor and she can get the point across that we collect these for many reasons like the history and as investments etc, could only help us The Afflicted Ones. That anything she can get The Non Afflicted Ones to understand and that helps them live comfortably with us, would be good for the cause. A understanding that proves hey ! He isn't crazy.

Any Advise, Thoughts or Suggestions from you The Afflicted Ones that I could pass along to her?

    One last question,
Do you think The Non Afflicted Ones among us would appreciate or have a interest in a book like this?

I'd order a dozen copies to hand out to The Non Afflicted Ones It could do nothing less than make my life easier.

    Regards,

    Thank You Bob K.
This really isn't a joke as a few members had contacted me about. In my OP I had pasted in most of a E-mail from her.

I'm really looking for other members thoughts and suggestions. I'll be meeting with her this Sunday afternoon. She'll be setting up some guide lines and a outline that I can use to better word questions for these thoughts and suggestions from fellow collectors. Talking with her makes it sound like a interesting project. A light hearted look at our passion of collecting. A book that can we can use to take a lighter look at ourselves and for those around us to help them understand why and what it is that we do. I'll know more after this meeting and how to better word questions for replies. I'll appreciate any and all replies. I know it will be a lot of hard work and just hope there will be enough interest to collectors and those who stand by us. Or should I say..... Those That Put Up With Us?

    Thanks again,
    Charlie-painter777

P.S. Thx Also for sharing the eye candy!!

My wife tells her girl friends it's not about owning another gun. He has plenty of those. It's not about owning a piece of history, as he has plenty of those. She tells them buying a carbine is just the start. He belongs to a club full of guys doing the same thing. It's after he gets one that the fun begins. Then explains that there were at least 10 different makers and they all had different markings. Knowing the names Rock-Ola, we have a juke box and Underwood because she types. These guys go nuts trying to find just the right marking on a part. Oh not just any part. It has to be the part for that certain group (she means serial number range). After telling them that in the 4 or 5 years they were made, there were many changes. These guys search the country, haunt the shows looking for a silly little part. He brings it home and says "sweetie look, I found it", she nods and smiles. She doesn't know a hammer from a bolt, and doesn't care. She knows I am enjoying it. Then she hears me groan it's the wrong color tone, or the wear isn't right. She walks away, not wanting to hear me swear for ten minutes. And when it's completed she actually appears to show interest in how nice it looks. She likes that it's wood instead of plastic. Her friends go wow. She says that's not all. Then you have the accessorizing (woman's term). He has boxes of bullet holders (pouches) and different bags (cases), even some kind of spy scope (sniperscope). She likes the bolt tool, the swivel part (pawl) it holds all this stuff in place, until I complain I break another tip off (swearing again). Her favorite is the classroom training because it is big and she can see how it works. Plus the chart explains it in terms she understands. After all that she tells them she really likes carbines. Her friends give her a funny look. Then she says he spends hours and hours on them, giving her time to do whatever she wants.

I love this gal. And have for 46 years now.

Tell her she has really picked the wrong time and year Charlie, as there are two very good Carbine books in the works at the moment by well respected writers that we all know. Might sell O.K at the abandoned wives Club. Mike.
