What happened!?
Huge puff of smoke out pf my type 53s action after firing this round and complete case split. This is from a gunshow bag of ammo. I've shot a lot of surplus 7.62x54r and never had a reaction like this. Its not the standard russian stuff. Anyone know what this ammo is? Will be discarding the other 30rds.

For anyone to be able to tell what it is, you need to post a photo of the headstamp or at least describe it.
Could be an optical illusion but it doesn't look long enough to be a Nagant round.

I'd say they are collector rounds at this point. Might be WWII 45 rounds. I don't know that much about how they labeled theirs but could just be too old and not stored all that well.

Pull the bullets and use those for .303...discard the rest.

I believe that is correct. Who woulda thunk it!

The bullets work fine in .303 and the rest of the components can go suck...

I think it's a must. Even for the ones you just showed us you can cut costs. You just need good brass. You can't get in ankle deep. I've used those very bullets in .303 myself and they're perfect. I don't shoot match...
