Is Lake City 7.62mm M59 Ball ammo rare?
This is loaded with the M59 bullet, a four piece bullet wih an iron, not steel, core.

I haven't seen any Lake City for about 2 years around No. Ohio.

I can not say that I have ever seen a complete box and after reading the Ammunition ID section found elsewhere on this Forum, I see what you mean by the four part core. I think photos are in order for our continued education here (specifically mine).

Here is a picture of a used box. I shall dig out some unopened boxes and some pulled bullets and take pictures. The ammo is burried and will take some time. I nevr found it to be particularly accurate.

Thhe M59 was supposed to be war time standard as it used less lead, which tends to become scarce during war rime. Since the primary core of th M59 is steel, the bullet muat be longer to obtain the desired weight. The cannelure on the M59 (like that of the M2 AP) is turned rather than rolled.

Many Thanks Cosine26, that is fascinating. I might like to add a box or two to my collection if the price is right. I simply do not have a clue as to the value in the market, but they sure appeal to me for historic reasons. A nice example of a niche in the development of ammunition for our Military. As an Army Brat, I was aware of munitions and weapons early in life. My Father is U.S. Army Ret. 19Kilo Heavy Armor(23 yrs).

I have only three unopened boxes of the 7.62mm M 59 ammo and a few pulled bullets. I am not really interested in disposing of them. After carefully examining the head stamp without opening a box I find that they are head stamped “LC 58”. Since the M14 was officially adopted in 1957, I would suppose that this the first year of service production. I was just interested in determining if they were rare or had any collector value
