    No4 mk1 cruciform bayonet with U.N. marking

I have a No4 mk1 cruciform bayonet with a very feint U.N. marking electro pencilled onto the upper part of the cruciform part of the blade. I believe that this bayonet has gone through a factory refurb/refinish after the marking was applied. All the other markings appear to be original. I have never seen a U.N. marking on any other Britishicon produced bayonet. I would guess that this was done for the Korean war? Does any-one know if this was a common practice for British equipment used on U.N. operations or could it have been done by another country after it had been sold as U.K. surplus to, perhaps, Ireland or a Commonwealth country? I'm sorry that I'm not able to post pictures.

The only things that I have ever seen distinctly UN marked were vehicles and helmets. Never seen or even heard of a bayonet so marked and in any case, the cruciform was obsolescent by the end of WW2.

The UN don't own anything as such, they just bludge money, equipment and men from the soppy donor nations............ Oh, don't get me going about the UN!!!!!

Some (though not that many I don't think, I've only seen a couple) MK1's had an Enfield inspection mark electro pencilled into the cruciform, maybe it's this mark?

Yes good point, could be an inspection mark by some-one with initials, U.N.. I thought it unusual as I've never seen it before on a bayonet.

In my experience and opinion - and I expect many others too - the UN are loathe to allow the use of rifles. So bayonets would be an absolute no-no!

Fair point. I was thinking that it could have been done for the Korean War when the U.N. was in it's infancy and the Western Allies fought under the U.N. banner. I will have another look at it but I think that there may also be a small arrow electro-pencil marked on next to the U.N. marking. These markings which are electro-pencilled on are ever so feint and it looks as if it has been refurbished afterwards including the whole Bayonet being re-blued. I think that originally the mk1 only had the socket part blued???
