I can't quite figure this one out as my #96953 has a serrated safety as well. Maybe the bottom of the bin theory applies here. Mike.

Pretty sure the checkered safeties hung around for a while after yours. I think they were sporadicly reported until about mid spring of 43.

    Mike,

Is that mag catch a type 1 with a long face? Or maybe one that was milled down type 2. Looks like a thick rail. I think that is ok in that serial number range.

Mike the magazine catch should be a type 2 (0.10 thick) and appears to be correct. The safety seems to be a bit late and it maybe should have been the type 1 checkered with the beveled edge? What is the barrel date on it?

Thanks all for the very constructive replies. I've never been able to find a chequered set that everyone was happy with. Most people agree those chequered mag catches are not right and maybe have been ground. They don't look like the books show. Here's my #96953. I'll work on it and report back. Got something more important to do tonight, had a call from a guy saying he had imported some excellent REPRO flippers so am about to track him down. And then do what is required !!!!. Mike.

Ditto what Inland said! It's getting very hard to come by carbines in REAL original condition these days.
It's always a treat when I see that Mike has posted something
