    M1 Garand operating rod

My buddy has a Win SN 1,371,xxx Garandicon that has problems with the operating rod. When cycled it moves out of the recvr track and jams.
I tried my operating rod from my SA 891,xxx and it works fine, staying in the recvr track when cycled. Laying the op rods against each other it appears that the dog legs in the rod are quite off.
Can anything be done with his rod to make it function better?
Any gunsmiths that are skilled at this?
    Sources of op rods?
The stock of his Garand does not appear to be USGI but a commercial stock.
He bought it from a guy who claims it was a lendlease rifle that was returned to the U.S.
    Thanks

The lug that fits the rail is worn out. I'm sure there is someone that can build up the lug and rework it but one should be careful doing such things to such a critical part.
