Remington Model 597

Just bought a new Rem 597 with camo stock at Wally World. It is really a nice rifle for the $168 I paid. Very smooth action, good sights, and very accurate. It loves my stockpiled Federal 36 gr HP ammo (also from Wally World).

Top of receiver has grooves, and also three screws in the middle. Can I fit some type of scope rings to the grooves, or do I need to get a Rem 597 type scope mount / base for it?

Either/or on the mounts.. the grooves are for those dinky 22lr scopes and the 3 screws are for the 597 mount....I prefeer the mount myself on my 597 (I'm running a red dot)

Some makers produce 1" rings which fit the 3/8" grooves so that a separate mount is not needed.

When scoping a rifle that has the 3/8" or 11mm dovetail mortice, the best setup is to use a really nice one piece mount often used on high powered spring piston and gas ram air rifles. These mounts will have at least three (often four) allen head screws on one side of the mount and provide superior clamping force over a large area of the mortice. The air rifle one piece mounts are aligngned to provide for barrel droop. This is also good for getting all the elevation needed for rimfire rifles as well.
Stay away from the see through two piece mounts found at the sporting goods isle of discount stores.
