New here just bought my first carbine

Hi all I'm new to here. I picked up my first M1 over the weekend. I payed 7 for it. It is a non import in real nice shape. These are hard to find around here but sadly I dont know what I got so I been studying the post here hoping I didnt pay too much. Its made by Inland serial number 5383844 with an Inland barrel dated 7-44. Has milled adjustable rear sight and bayonet lug. Stock is walnut marked NPM FJA and ordance stamp. Bolt is round. Has a smooth push button safety and smooth mag reliease. Came with a 10 round unmarked mag. I have a USGI 15 round mag somewhere to add to it. I also had a 30 round aftermarket mag but it doesnt latch up so cant use it. Stock is what ya'll call highwood and is very nice shape. Has TN marked in the slingwell. Metal is 99%. Very nice looking carbine. Came with oiler and what ya'll call C type sling attached. Sling is faded and not marked but looks original and been on the carbine along time. This looks like a vet bringback my guess Korea unless they added bayonet lug late WW2. Any information will help. I'll try to get a good camera to take pictures.

Welcome 3ky,
With no signs of any import markings...you did very well for $700. I've been seeing imports fetching that much lately. With your serial number being in the 5,383 mil range, you've got a Inland we sometimes call a transitional. Many changes were being implemented near this range. The round bolt and rear adj sight could very well be original or correct for it.
Is the oiler slot on your stock oval shaped or a I cut shape?
That stock would normally be found on a National Postal Meter. Your Inland would be found in a type III lo-wood marked HI or OI in the slingwell. With the Inland sized Crossed Cannons on the right...near the oiler slot. Those early NPM stocks are getting hard to find. A good starter book for you, if you don't already have it is U.S. M1 Carbines, Wartime Production by Craig Riesch. It has some errors but is worth the under $20 price tag.
To mount that 30rd mag you need a type IV mag catch. They are fairly cheap to pick up. It has the support arm on the left to help carry the weight of a fully loaded 30rd mag.
That sling will sell between $100-$150 about any day.
Now sit down, look at all the markings you can find and take a deep breath....it's just the start !!

No import markings. The oiler cut is oval. I have a military tec manual on these I'll have to remenber where it is and look at it. I'll order the book you sugested. I havent taken it apart to see who made its gutz since I dont know how nor know what marker marks are. I will once I find my tec manual. First one I owned but been wanting one since I was a kid and why i have a few magiznes and a teck manual. I'll try to get some better pictures.

Got this from a guy who had it given to him by his uncle. Uncle had it for a very long time since the 60s what the guy said. Can tell its not an import and the stock markings are original. Maybe vet bringback or eary DCM sales. I'll take a picture of the barrel band and hopfully get some good hirez pictures. Nice looking carbine to add to my collection and thanks for the info. Was wondering if it was WW2 or Korea config now I know.

Thanks now the question is should I shoot it or is it expensive and needs to be in the gun safe? I seen the rear sight is marked HI. I might leave this one in the safe and look for a beater or import to shoot. I seen some of the prices these are fetching. I remenber when they werent worth much.

I'd say its probably a DCM purchase. Its possible the original stock was damaged and the NPM was put on it at the unit level, or perhaps it was done during the big rebuild program in 1949. Are there any rebuild marks on the LH side of the stock? Maybe a .U. , STD PROD , AAK , RIA or similar? In any event, I would shoot it just to verify function, but first do a detail-strip, clean and oil it. Don't remove the gas piston. If you want to shoot a carbine a lot, you should get a current production commercial one.

It's not like it's the last one out there...If we all shot our carbines there would still be plenty around for our Great-Great-Great etc Grandchildren to gawk at.

No rebuild marks on the left hand side. Stock is just marked NPM FJA and lightly marked ordance stamp. TN in the sling well. Barrel band has bayonet lug and marked AMCO. Rear sight is marked HI and is the cast adjustable sight. Has a smooth push button safety and mag release. Mag wont accept 30 round mag. I havent taken it apart to see who made the guttz since I dont know how to field strip. Oh front sight is marked N. No other barrel markings except Inland MFG division of General Motors 7-44. Does the barrel match the build date? Carbine is in nice shape I really like it. I'll try it out and see what it does. Bore is bright and shiney but I dont have any ammo to see if what it gauges. Thanks for all the input now to order some carbine books. I seen one more at a gunshop. Its an Underwood non import for 8 not as nice as this one and has bayonet lug with adjustable rear sight. I wonder if i should buy it? LOL
