Nice to see somebody knows about launching rifle grenades from the shoulder. All over the internet is the myth that launching is supposed to be done with the stock on the ground.

The internet is just like a book. Once something appears on a website, it is believed to be factual.

Just for clarification, it's not really a myth for rifles using hand grenade cup dischargers versus rifle grenades.

There's a Knowledge Libraryicon entry on WW1 Enfield Wire Wrapped Grenade Rifles and Dischargers (click here), showing close up pics as well as instructions on how to use them.

By the way, if anyone wants to have some fun with the cup dischargers, here's a great "fun" video in The Screening Room (click here) section of the Milsurp Knowledge Library.

It's a range video of members engaged in The Great Canadianicon Tennis Ball Challenge competitive match at Milcun, using WW1 Enfield Wire Wrapped Grenade Rifles and Dischargers (click here).

Make sure you turn ON your speakers and turn the volume up to hear the sound effects !

Bill, I've seem a fair number of WW2 photos of GIs firing rifle grenades from rifles with the butt on the ground. Maybe shooting it from the shoulder in BT cured them of doing that any more!

Mr. Ricca is correct. To launch from the ground is just a hope and wish situation to maybe get a hit in the general area.(ww2 photos notwithstanding) If you seriously need to hurt something or somebody with a rifle grenade you best shoulder the rifle to control the launch and improve the odds of your attempt.

The myth is grenades should be launched only with the butt on the ground due to recoil. That is total nonsense. There is no way to hit a moving armored vehicle with an Anti Tank Grenade without shooting it from the shoulder. Here are the instructions from the TM.

Firing with the butt on the ground is OK for pyrotechnic signals and indirect fire (like a mortar).

We fired the Energa Rifle Grenades using the provided sight, and the sling strung tightly across the upper body to absorb the recoil, with the buttstock under the armpit. The Energa Rifle Grenade, while not as accurate as a well aimed bullet, could be placed into a 3 foot square at 100 to 150 yards; I know because I did just that many, many, times with practice grenades. I was also capable of dropping them onto the top of tanks and bunkers.

I remember several different armor penetration capabilities, none of which were less than 12 inches of armor. While it may be true that the current 40mm grenade launchers are easier to use, more accurate, and faster to bring into action, they are better against personnel, while the Energa Rifle Grenade is far superior against armor or bunkers. The shaped charge and its design were the same as the 3.5 rocket.

I believe that Bill Ricca had done a paper on rifle grenades, which included a bit about the Energa.

I was trained with the M79 round and that was strictly fragmentation; there was no anti-armored capability.

You are correct, I have a lot of original research information on Grenade Launchers. I have also launched over 200 projectiles since I started "playing with them" in 1968.

My biggest problem with the M29 Energa was accuracy. I had only a couple in possession and as launching continued they would get more beat up with damaged or missing fins. When I was launching into my Barn Window which was about 5 ft x 5 ft at 100 yards, I was lucky to get it inside 1/2 the time. My projectile "old red" has been launched probably 75 times or more since I started launching Energas in 1986 and now gives me no consistency in travel. But I love him anyway.
