Sarco has been getting such rave reviews lately I though I would try them out again. It's been a while. They have listed an Italian 7.62 NATO Garand conversion kit for some time. I want to do something different with the barreled receiver on order.

The barrel (SA 1963) looks great. It's been on a gun but the muzzle gauges 1 on the the old ME gauge. It'll be the first Garand I ever had with a bore that tight.

The stock came in the original factory wrap. So pristine I'll hate putting that first ding in it. The Italian stock profile is more like the more slender WWII USGI profile than the beefier Korean era stocks.

Here is one I put together. It is very accurate. Since the barrels are take offs the timing may have to be adjusted. The barrel on mine timed at about close to 6 o'clock so I had the shoulder rolled and it then timed at about 7:30 which gave it a good draw. On the barrel I had the chamber is really cut for 7.62 Nato. Barrel headspaced easily using actual 7.62 Nato gauges, GO = 1.6355", NO-GO = 1.6405". It also headspaced good using 308 Win gauges as a check only with the Win NO-GO (1.634") used as 7.62 Nato GO gauge (1.6355") and the Win FIELD gauge (1.638") used as the 7.62 Nato NO-GO (1.6405"). Due to the generous chamber fired cases are a little swollen, at least they are in my barrel. You may want to look at smoothing the chamber contour at the lip where the saddle of the op rod meets it. There is an aburpt jump when the op rod meets the chamber contour that may need to be reduced, at least it did on mine. A regular length M1 barrel supports the saddle of the op rod and there is no jump, you can see for yourself in the pictures. In any case, the rifle went together well for me and it is a good shooter. I shoot reloads with a dedicated lot of mil-spec brass for this rifle only. 308 Win die will work, but you need a RCBS Precision-Mic, or other means, to measure the shoulder data line and resize headspace accordingly. Once you know the case headspace of your rifle then you can set the die accordingly. The fired cases in my chamber measure about +.006 or so over ANSI minimum so I resize the cases -.002 which would be +.004 over ANSI minimum. If you set the case shoulder back to ANSI minimum it works the brass to much and rapidly reduces case life. As I said my fired cases are a little swollen so you may have to run them through the die a couple of times to size them. This works for me, but your mileage may vary. All legal terms apply to reloading. I would shoot milsurp if it were feasable logistically and monetary, that is if you don't have the time to reload or don't want to fool with reloading.

Gas port sizes on USGI .308 Garands are quite a bit larger than for .30-06 and my .308 Garand did not run good until it had a .1065 port size.

Gas Port for 30-06 M1 Garand - 0.0790" dia + 0.0015" - this equates to between a #46 and #47 drill bit.

Gas Port for 7.62X51 MM Army M1 Garand - 0.1050" dia + 0.0015" - this equates to between a #36 and #37 drill bit.

Gas Port for 7.62X51 MM Navy M1 Garand - 0.1065" dia + 0.0015" - this equates to a #36 drill bit.
