So, I took my M1 today for its first shoot since...last year (shhhht). I have rebarreled it with a 1943 SA barrel I bought from a member of this board 5 or 6 years ago and I am still happy with this rifle. I got 1,5" inch groups at 100 meters using hand loaded ammunitions.

Getting the rifle zeroed was an exciting adventure...so much different from my issued FN FNC ! As 100 meters is a little under 300 yards, the elevation knob is in an intermediate position, somewhere between 200 & 300.

Next projects:
-putting nm sights on it.
-building a .22LR training rifle out of a demilled receiver (3 on hands) & a relined barrel I plan to buy from numrich.


Ask me about a single 25yrs old nco with way too much free time...

Recherche d'abord les munitions, qui est moins cherchez les femmes. Mon français est si mauvais. Apologize my poor french, it is much worse than my english and that is not the best. Gabriel do you build the .22 by yourself ( complete ) or is there an kit to buy ?

Your french is surely far better than my non-existent German (twenty words at all).

I plan to build it using a demilled receiver that I rewelded. The barrel will be a cluncker grade from Sarco or Numrich relined with a .22 liner, but with an extension bringing the chamber at +/- the front locking lugs level.

By milling a new bolt and modifying a demilled operating rod, I think it would be possible to built a blow-back M1 using .22lr Ruger handgun.

For the ammo, I must go out to buy powder & bullets : only 100 bullets left and maybe 150 grams of powder.

Gabriel, that sounds very interesting. Is it possible for you to tell me how it works and, if you want to, to send a few pics of your work ? My french is only good enough to order my dinner at a restaurant. I wasnt the best at school in that case. Where do you buy powder and so? Here in Germany the prices seems getting higher every months. The most things i order at Hunting Sport in Luxembourg. Good dealer good prices.

My French is a bit rusty... but isn't "Cherchez les femme" a phrase that roughly
translates to "whenever a man is in trouble, a woman will somehow be at the root
of the problem". Maybe that should be "Cherchez la femme".

Gabriel, 100 meters is not a little under 300 yards. It is 328 feet, or 107 yards. Additionally, the drop form 100 to 200 yards for .30-06 is about 2 inches (168gr, HPBT with Vo=2700 fps). So that means a difference on target of about 1/8" (3,5mm plus bas) if you just set for 100yards. It's a different story at longer distances.

I am presently working on loads for my International Harvester (1955) with help of chronograph and scope. Will keep you informed if you're interested.

Cherchez les femmes can be translated as "Look for women".

As for powder, I buy those from Freylinger near Luxembourg or Lengele near Charleroi. For sure, Hunting Sport is a truly good shop but a bit far for me....and I don't shoot that much.

I will probably begin my conversion in October (as the bathroom will be completed, my machine shop will quickly follow). I will take pics and draw blueprints that I will post here. M1 Garand life will be longer if we share our knowledges.

And for the history buffs, I will not slaughter original components...I will use left-over from previous M1 Garand slaughtering program.
