    RCMP Long Branches

I have an interest in acquiring an "MP"-marked Long Branch and have found the MKLicon entry here very interesting. (thanks) What, if any, premium on purchase price should be expected on the RCMP rifles?

    Thanks.

    ..

These are pretty rare as LB's go. The 2 that I've seen for sale had a significant premium. More than my level of pain....

Some have been faked. There are complete serial number lists of the known MP marked No. 4s. If you do find one, post the Serial number on this site and someone will let you know if it is legitimate.

With a little over a thousand verified serial numbers on the “List” they certainly do command a premium when they come up for sale. On average I would say about 30% to 50% above the going rate for a Long Branch No4. I still have the top one but sold the bottom one in a moment of weakness. I have seen a few who’s serial numbers weren’t on the list and when sold their value seems to be lesser.

A number were sold by Alan Lever in Vancouver back in the 60's that are not on the list. I have a copy of the numbers somewhere....drop me an email if your number is not on the accepted list.

I have been told that the list of serial numbers is incomplete and that a set of MP "stamps" are on the loose so unless you get one listed as correct a person should be cautious. If the list is incomplete then there probably are some legit ones out there that will be impossible to verify.
Why use a 50 pound bomb when a 500 pound bomb will do?

I have found at least three serial numbers not on the list to date that I have been asked to verify for different members. I always feel bad when I have to pass along that little bit of bad news because it doesn't necessarley mean it's not original but we may never know for sure.
I once heard a rummer ( so take this with a grain of salt as I can't remember the source ) that a fellow in the Toronto area bought an unknown number of L/B No4's to which he added the MP stamp in 1973 in order to take advantage of the RCMP centennial.
The Holey Grail of RCMP No4 collecting has to be finding the serial number not only on the main list but also on the Acceptance of offer form issued by the Crown Assets Disposal Corp. dated Feb. 16 1968 to Lever Arms when they bought a batch of 89 rifles from the Queen. Well that or finding one of the 4 Savage made rifles on the list.
