Boresnake on an M1

Well, you should clean them and its certainly better than a steel cleaning rod!

There is no shortcut to cleaning the bore of a rifle. There is no tech device that will do it for you. Not even the ones you plug into the wall outlet.

It takes an elbow, a rod, a flannel patch or two, a bore brush, and the mystery secret sauce of your choice. And there are a lot of them. From 3 bucks to 43 bucks for a little jar. Some of them will reduce your groups to one inch just by buying them.

I prefer the ones that work while I watch TV or have gone to sleep on the couch.

I have used various calibers of Boresnake in a variety of rifles. It is fine for a quick wipe of the barrel. It will not suffice for a serious cleaning of the bore. I keep one handy when at the range as some of my rifles shoot better groups when the barrel is wiped periodically. For serious cleaning get yourself a good stiff steel rod with a brass muzzle guide such as is sold by Kleen Bore, etc. You do not want to use a jointed rod and you do not want to use any rod without a muzzle guide as you risk damage to the crown of the barrel. Use a spear point jag and patches that fit your bore. You will also need some good, brass (not steel) cored phosphor-bronze cleaning brushes. Shooters Choice, Hoppes, etc. are good choices for bore cleaners. HTH. Sincerely. bruce.
