I remember using them when I was a Cadet at my school. The .22" No8 rifle would be set up in the rest and us young cadets would aim the rifle, using the sights of course, at the target down the 25 yard range. The instructor would then fire the rifle and see where the shot went. If it was a couple of inches away from the bull, he'd just tell you where you were going wrong but if it was outside that or off the target, he'd bang you on the head with his clip-board. You quickly got the hang of it!

Ours disn't have an elevation mechanism, just a friction cramp. I'll be the proud owner of a few tomorrow!!!!!

[size=3]It's a Canadian MK III Armourer's Rest manufactured by AML and you'll see the C Broad Arrow markings on various parts. It's in pretty good shape, but the leather to protect the rifle is almost completely worn off the holders.

The picture posted by the OP is the top of the later type of Aiming Rest, made of steel.
