At the risk of taking this thread off on a tangent, I"ll ask this question.
I received an email from CMP today indicating they have received my paperwork/application for a service-grade Garand and to expect a 60-90 day delay for processing prior to shipping. The Mfg is SA (only Mfg left). What can I expect to receive? I own 2 "T" stamped 303's but have never so much as even held a garand.

Well that is a loaded question Powder, the only guarantee is you will get a rifle that meets CMP’s grading criteria for muzzle wear and throat erosion and the rest is seriously luck of the draw.

yup luck of the draw, more so on an SA.

Most HRAs were real nice.

Most SA saw WWII and Korea, and the following police action and training and such.

Most have been rebuilt more than a couple of times at that point.

If you get a high number SA, than it has a better chance of being in "better condition", but wont have the WWII history behind it.

With that said, there have been some real nice ones showing up on the CMP forum. Greeks have done real nice rebuilds.

Your wait wont be as long as it was for those of use who placed our orders in late winter / spring. They are moving along well now a days....

Thanks for the encouragement...I guess time will tell. I understand that the Garand only likes a specific diet of 150gr ball, moderate rate powder with a muzzle vel of no greater than 2700 fps. Any recommendations as to powder choices (i.e. IMR4895 etc) to start with; considering that this thread implies a shortage of inexpensive surplus ammo? Also (I bear my total ignorance again), do I need concern myself with variances in quality of clips for the Garand...or can I finally assume correctly that all clips for the Garand are of the same quality (experience has taught me that when it comes to firearms accessories, there is ALMOST always a wide divergence of quality for what at first seems to be similar parts sold by different suppliers)?

4895 and similar burning rate powders like Varget are ideal in the Garand. Powders as slow as IMR4064 are OK and some get even better accuracy. 4064 is as slow a powder as is good in an as-issued Garand.

The 50+ year old axiom for reloading for the Garand has been "no powder faster than IMR3031 or slower than IMR4320, and no bullet heavier than 180 grains".
