The book I ordered " The Germanicon Sniper 1914 to 1945 " arrived today. I spent so much time reading it that I forgot about my car servicing appointment, I didn't get groceries, and I procrastinated about going to the gym. I did eventually goto the gym and pick up a few groceries, but spent most of the afternoon with the book. I was amazed at how much work the germans did to mount scopes on their rifles, modern mounts and rings seem so simple by comparison. Short side mount, long side mount, hi turret and lo turret, claw mount, ZF41 mount... too much info. I kinda like the look of the turret mounts the best, and windage elevation sounds a bit easier than with the side mounts. Still have to decide to go ahead with this and hoard funds, as my m1 garand arrived a few days ago. Unitl later I'll do research and keep digging around.

I have done a repro K98 high turret project and it turned out well. I tried to get it as close as I could to an authentic one within my means, as I don't take drilling a K98 of any stripe lightly. I started with a Yugoicon refurbed K98 that was a fantastic shooter. Next, I bought a '40's Zeiss Zielvier from a gentleman in Germanyicon. Finally, I went with mock turret mounts from Iron Elite. The mount was a bit of a compromise but to mount scopes into authentic turret rings, you have to disassemble the scope, reassemble inside the rings and then silver solder them in. Without any experience or proper tools for the job, I opted out of a working turret rig with the value of the scope in question. I may take the leap to a working turret rig on this rifle in the future but I need some guinea pig scopes to work on first. Anyways, here is the finished project. Great shooter, it will group around an 1" with handloads.

Got back from vacation yesterday. Steve you have a beautiful rifle there! How much did you pay for your scope, and where did you spot it if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks guys, unfortunately the closest I will likely ever come to the real thing.

I got the scope for $350 from a gentleman in Germanyicon. I didn't win one of his auctions on Egun, but he let me know he had another scope for sale. For that price, I jumped on it, definitely worth more now. It is a Zeiss Zielvier that was made around '44.

Another option besides a Zeiss Zielver (which go for big bucks on Ebay now) would be a prewar German scope like an Oigee, Gerard or Busch Rathenow. They look the same, have a steel tube and European reticle but you can get them for a decent price.

I will check out egun and see what they have. I was looking on ebay, and there were several pre-war scopes for sale. Getting a pre-war scope looked much cheaper than an actual carl zeiss, those went for about 800 bucks. I am still scrounging around for info, so I will keep on searching.

Check Germanicon Ebay too, you will see different stuff on there than here. Just make sure that you don't get a scope with the integral rail on the bottom of it. Almost all of the WW2 German mounting systems (excepting a double claw mount) won't work with the rail on the bottom of the scope. The railed scopes are generally post war and will require custom made bases to work correctly.
