A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Are you referring to the scopes used on the A4? There were several scopes used on the A4, from 2.5 power (Weaver) to 4 power (Lyman). The Marine A1 used a 7.8 power Unertl.

To the scopes mentioned by Jim above you could add:

    M1903 - World War 1

    M1908 Warner Swazey - 6X
    M1913 Warner Swazey - 5.2x
    A5 Winchester - 5 x

    M1903A4 - Post War

    M84 - 2.2x

Although all original M1903A4's had their receivers marked "03-A3" the A4's were not assembled from completed or 'specailly selected' A3's. They were all built as separate rifles from the ground up.

There were exceptions but the telescopic sights used by most combatant's sniper's duriing WW2 averaged between 2.5x and 4x.

    Regards,

    Jim
