    Long Branch Furniture?

    Hello,
I don't post a lot which is not to say that I don't read some of the posts and I do own about 20 righteous specimens of the venerable L/E. Be that as it may, I could use your help on this one. Your collective knowledge is always valuable. I recently acquired a very nice 1945 LB, s/n 89L84XX. The furniture is so perfect that it can't be original in spite of the fact that the forend is serialed. There is no indication of an FTR. For one the furniture is a deeply coloured walnut, generally not available to the Canadians. The wrist of the buttstock is marked with P and underneath, 58. Perhaps Pakistani with the date of manufature? Stamped next to it but at 180 degrees in orientation from it is IW with 82 directly underneath. What is the origin of the wood? Second , the sight is a Mk2 with a P in a circle. Pakistani? Any help is always appreciated. A very Merry Christmas to all who read this.

Sight is Britsh manufactured by Poole.

The forend marked "P" is Pakistani manufactured in 1958. They made replacement wood in the late 50's and early 60's. Yours looks like walnut however is Luan which is a type of mahogany. I've got a similar forend that I purchased sight unseen and it was described as Long Branch. Looks great new however it's very soft and does not stand up on a shooter. Lots of these showing up lately.

    Cheers, Ron

    Thanks Ron,
Any thoughts on the odd cartouche above the P on the wrist?

I can't let that go! I don't know where they got it, but Long Branch had some very fine walnut indeed.

The Pakistani forends have been ID'd as another wood by Krinko, IRRC(?)
