    4.2 Springfield

Guys, would like to know if the barrel could possibly be original to this 4.2 million Springfield. It was purchased from CMPicon as a USGI rack grade 5-6 years ago. Also, what would be the correct stock?

From the barrel targeting and proof marks, absolutely! By 11-53 the DAS cartouche use was well under way. Good looking, original finish rifle.

    Heat lot A44A?

Thank you sir. At the time I was hoping for a luck of the draw WWII rack grade. Back then you could reasonably expect an original finish rifle. Was pleasantly surprised to get the 4.2 with most of all it's original Springfield parts. Have seen previous post about the barrel dates having a pretty good range. This barrel matches the condition of the rifle with strongs lands and grooves and just a hint of frosting. It's proven to be an excellent shooter. It came with a very good condition birch replacement stock with a very tight lock up. I would like to find the correct stock. Is there a posibility of it have a SA/JLG? I'm thinking the DAS is more likely and probable for 11-53 as you say, and do not want to use a JLG if it would not be correct.

Probably not. The transition occurred in full late Summer - early Fall 1953 and obviously it couldn't have been assembled before the barrel date. By about 9 or 10 - 53, the transition was about complete. There are always overlaps but 11-53 is quite definitive.

You have saved some time and $$. Thanks again! Considering the cost was $350 plus shipping it's been the best rifle buy I will ever make. Now to find a matching, dark finished USGI DAS stock with a little character.

DBarn, little character DAS? If you are refering to the 3/8" DAS, only HRA used that one. All Springfield Armory rifles that used the DAS cartouche used the 1/2". Hope this helps...

Ramboueille - could you explain the sequence of the three "P" proof marks and punch mark. I know that one "P" is applied when the barrel is proofed alone, the punch when the barrel is proofed after being assembled. When are the other two "P" s applied ???? Thanks, Joe
