Another vote for leaving it on and using just a little more care in sanding. Tape the metal off and use sandpaper strips on the flat edge of a small 6" file.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. I will accept PayPal, Zelle, MO and good old checks (and cash if you want to stop by for a tour!). CLICK BANNER to send me a PM for International pricing and shipping. Manufacturer of various vintage rifle scopes for the 1903 such as our M73G4 (reproduction of the Weaver 330C) and Malcolm 8X Gen II (Unertl reproduction). Several of our scopes are used in the CMP Vintage Sniper competition on top of 1903 rifles. Brian Dick ... A34 meant that the wood is so fragile. And it is.

Thanks for the info fellas. I was able to get a local gunsmith to remove it for me on a Sat. and didn't charge me a dime. Great guy. I ordered the tool Sat. also.

I was able to get it back on using the wire method. Anyway, my first attempt at refinishing came out ok. I was hoping for a little better, but it isn't bad.

    Things I learned:

    1. Do not strip and leave disassembled rifle on kitchen table over the course of a weekend. You will be "motivated" to finish it and get if off the table.

    2. Do not accidently put regular dishwashing detergent in automatic dishwasher. Yes, it suds up just like in the movies. You will get further "motivation" if you do this to get out of the kitchen.

    3. No matter how many newspapers you put down on the kitchen table, it will not be enough. Further "motivation" ensues.

    4. When you're done, you will have a feeling of accomplishment and admire your rifle. You will quickly want to remove it from kitchen.

    5. Pick a private place to do your work and get the right tools before starting.
