Another vote for leaving it on and using just a little more care in sanding. Tape the metal off and use sandpaper strips on the flat edge of a small 6" file.

A34 meant that the wood is so fragile. And it is.

Thanks for the info fellas. I was able to get a local gunsmith to remove it for me on a Sat. and didn't charge me a dime. Great guy. I ordered the tool Sat. also.
I was able to get it back on using the wire method. Anyway, my first attempt at refinishing came out ok. I was hoping for a little better, but it isn't bad.
Things I learned:
1. Do not strip and leave disassembled rifle on kitchen table over the course of a weekend. You will be "motivated" to finish it and get if off the table.
2. Do not accidently put regular dishwashing detergent in automatic dishwasher. Yes, it suds up just like in the movies. You will get further "motivation" if you do this to get out of the kitchen.
3. No matter how many newspapers you put down on the kitchen table, it will not be enough. Further "motivation" ensues.
4. When you're done, you will have a feeling of accomplishment and admire your rifle. You will quickly want to remove it from kitchen.
5. Pick a private place to do your work and get the right tools before starting.
