1903 Springfield replacement barrel and parts?

I'm a new member who is not a collector, but who is intersted in military rifles. I have a 1903 Springfield which I came into some years ago and put to the back of the safe. Someone had started to "sporterize" it, but, thankfully, didn't get too far along with that travesty. The stock was trashed, and some of the metal parts were gone.

I have obtained a replacement stock and all of the missing metal parts, and the rifle looks good, but the barrel is shot out. I'd love to get my hands on a good quality replacement barrel. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

What serial number range? What type of stock and handguard do you have? Photos would help.

The serial number is: 1371xxx.

I put it into a new manufacture C stock (because I like that contour - as I said, I'm not a collector) and a new upper handguard.

I don't currently have any photos, as I am a complete Luddite with regard to digital photography and its computer interface. My wife has a digital camera, however, and I'll see what I can do about learning the ropes.

Here's an example of what you might expect in acquiring a barrel. I sold one dated 11-30 with both sights, and a muzzle wear of 2.0 for $366.50 on auction.

You should be able to find a decent GI barrel for less than $200. But installation could cost more than $100. Hard to find someone close that is reputable.

If you're not a collector, just watch out for a 1942 barrel from Springfield, they tend to be the cheapest. If possible, try to get one with a front and rear sight base installed. Trying to install the rear sight base can be another headache.

The CMP has new Criterion '03 and '03-A3 barrels for sale at their e-store. $189 apiece.

What is your current barrel date? Have you tried to handload some 150gr. M2 GI-style bullets? Download them and shoot a match. Good luck. You may not need a new barrel.
