Several weeks ago some friends called me on a Sunday morning and said they were headed to Perry and did I want to go. Since I was the one that started that conversation around April I felt obligated to escort them in their adventure. First we hit Commercial Row where I obtained a couple of 10 round mags for my XD-45 from the nice folks at Springfield and a couple bricks of small pistol primers at another store. Then we headed to the North Store. Now I already have a CMPicon Smith Corona 03A3 and a CMP Inland carbine but I was dissatisfied at the time with the M1icon's. Ah but this time as I was looking at the rack and field grades I turned and saw this very nice rifle in the service rack. Beatuiful wood and I mean pristine wood (stamped CMP on the bottom) the tag said muzzle 1 throat 2. It was an H&R 5 million number with a 55 barrel. It followed me home. It shoots real good too. The first time I took it out for a walk the only range open was the 200 yard range. It took a clip to pretty much dial it in but I was keeping most of them inside a 12" target. Not to bad for an old blind man that was 4 when this rifle was built.

Although I've never tried any shooting beyond 100 yards, except .22s at the river, your shooting appears to be excellent.

Congrats on your new rifle. My 'problem' is whether to sell the handy Mini 30 FTF (cheap plink ammo), just to buy a second Garandicon.
With the tedious, time-consuming single-stage Lee press (all manually trimmed etc, trimmer often Yanked out of tight cases with difficulty...), it will take lots of time to reload for the Garand, as it is for my Lee-Enfields.

My answer would be "no." I keep a plinker rifle around because even with its cheaper ammo, a trip to a range to introduce a friend to rifles can cost $100. I'm not rich, so I need the cheap ammo option.

Thanks Bob, and that makes sense.

Will keep it for a good while, despite having an SKS.

The hot water spray works great, especially on a hot day when you can leave it out in the sun to melt out and dry. I plan on visiting Anniston this fall, would love to just go through rifle after rifle!

    UPDATE:
I was able to take my M1icon to the range the other day. This was the first time that I was able to use my newest acquisition. Everything about this gun and the ammo functioned perfectly. Overall, I'm very impressed with the quality that the CMPicon has to offer the public.

I received many compliments from other people about this firearm. Honestly, I think they were jealous at what I had and what they didn't. Sure, there were plenty of AR-15s, SKSs, and AKs, but there was only one M1 Garand, and that one was mine!

    Paulm,

Thanks for the warm welcome. There are so many knowledgeable and helpful people on this forum. I've learned a lot about my rifle just by poking around different threads when I have a chance.

Thanks Laufer as a good friend who is an excellent shot says I'm adequet. If I can keep them within minute of bad guy I'm happy.

Keep the plinker. I single stage all my ammo and hand trim all my cases as well. A trick I have come up with for those sticky cases on the trimmer. Take your deburring tool and lightly champher the inside of the neck and then treim halfway to length. Remove case and trim inside of neck again and finish trim and debur. It certainly helps me.
