    03A3 Pinned Stocks

Have heard several reasons for switch back to bolts from pins. Two that sound most plausible are that recoil shoulder cracked from either ball rounds or when grenade launching. What was the reason that effected the elimination of pins? Any input always appreciated.

Grenade firing cracked the wood (stock) immediately. Prolonged firing cracked the wood (stock), as well. Any more questions?

No Steve, firing grenades off a M1903 did not ‘immediately’ crack a stock, I’ve done it enough and did not crack any stocks,, pined or bolted. I fired all mine off my shoulder, as it should be done. If you stick the butt into hard or rocky soil it will probably crack or break the stock but only the untrained did that.

Soft ground or soft sand bags would probably prolong the life of the stock but it is not good for the stock.
Firing off the shoulder is the only realistic way to launch rifle grenades.

The pined stocks just did not hold up as well as the bolted ones. I am not even sure that rifle grenade launching was officially given as the sole culprit in the switch back to bolted stocks.

    You really do both...

...If you are firing a M9 Heat at a tank or into a window to take out a MG nest , then direct fire from the shoulder using the " peep-N-post" is what you do. If you are launching it as a mini-mortar ( anti-personel ) or launching hand grenades , smoke , or WP , you will be firing from the ground using the bubble sight or the sling marks. The shape of the ground is where you are , the other side usually didn't allow time outs to move to softer ground.
I've shot quite a few off from the ground , and I just restocked up from Sarco to try direct fire. I figure this will burn through the fins at a much higher rate than high angle fire. Any tips from you who have done this direct fire before ? Or just follow the manual , get your arms correct , get you thumb out of the way , and go for it ?
By the way , I've shot them off an 03A3 with a straight grip stock with good grain pattern and a repro boot. I pick up a $25 Garandicon stock , good sanded condition that had the sight holes drilled . I put the sight back on and added a new repro boot , so I'll be shooting that , too. I also have a good late M2 carbine stock and an early Plainfield with a comercial bbl that I'll be using also.
